Tension Headaches

Tension Headaches: relief from those stressing days

A tension headache is characterized as being infrequent episodes of headaches that last minutes to days long.  The pain is typically on both sides of the head; it feels like a pressure or tightening of mild to moderate intensity.   The Mayo Clinic describes it as ”a diffuse, mild to moderate pain that’s often described as feeling like a tight band around your head”.  The pain does not get worse with routine physical activity.

Usually there is not any associated nausea, light or sound sensitivity with a tension type headache.  These are the most common headache.  How they come about is still under great debate, especially the muscle tension theory.

It has been found that most patients diagnosed with tension headaches respond very well to cervical adjustments.  This goes in line with the cervicogenic cause, usually brought on by forward head posture.   Just have someone look at you from the side to see if your head is forward of your body.

Potential triggers to tension headaches can be:

  • Stress
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Poor posture
  • Working in awkward positions or holding a certain position for a long period of time
  • Clenching your jaw
  • Hunger can be a precipitating factor

Awesome Upper Cervical Chiropractic care is an effective way to balance the posture, neurology, cranial nerves, cerebral spinal fluid flow and blood flow to the head and neck. The Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapy in 1995 noted that four weeks after cervical care, patients sustained therapeutic benefit, with a decreased need for over the counter medication.

Tension headaches have also been theorized to result from imbalances in serotonin and endorphins in the brain. Thus interfering with the brains ability to suppress pain.

From a realistic viewpoint of “ouch, I’m stressed and have a nagging headache”.  Awesome Upper Cervical Chiropractic makes complete sense.  First of all, balance is restored to an already stressed out body.  The resulting neurological coordination between your fight or flight mechanism and your rest and regenerate nerves will put you in a more optimized healing state.

You calm down, relax, function better and heal.  Life is good again and you feel better.  Now, doesn’t that sound like the reason you read this in the first place?
